After more than 15 years of moving families and businesses across the Kansas City metro, we’ve seen what a difference timing makes. The right move date can save you hundreds of dollars and a lot of stress — the wrong one can mean delays, heat exhaustion, or scrambling for availability. Here’s what we’ve learned.
The Best Months to Move in Kansas City
September, October, and November
Fall is hands-down the best season to move in Kansas City. Temperatures drop into the 60s and 70s, making it comfortable for movers and easier on your belongings. Summer crowds are gone, so you’ll have more date flexibility and — often — better rates. October is our personal favorite: beautiful weather, low humidity, and no competition for weekend slots.
March and April
Early spring is another solid window. School is still in session (less competition from family moves), weather is warming up, and moving companies aren’t yet at peak demand. Just watch the forecast — spring storms in KC can pop up fast.
When to Avoid Moving in Kansas City
June, July, and August
Summer is the busiest — and most expensive — time to move in KC. Heat indexes regularly hit 100°F+, which is brutal for crews and can damage furniture, electronics, and items left in a truck. Availability is tightest and prices are highest. If you must move in summer, book at least 4–6 weeks out and schedule an early morning start.
End of Month (Any Month)
The last 3–4 days of any month are the busiest in the moving industry, period. Most leases end on the 30th or 31st, which means everyone is moving at once. If you can shift your move to the middle of the month, you’ll typically save money and have a wider choice of dates.
December, January, and February
Winter moves in Kansas City come with real risks — ice, snow, and frigid temps can make loading and unloading dangerous and slow. We can and do move in winter, but it requires extra prep (floor protection, slower drives, more wrap on furniture). Budget extra time and keep an eye on weather forecasts in the week leading up to your move.
Best Day of the Week to Move
Monday through Thursday are consistently easier and often more affordable than weekends. If your work schedule allows a mid-week move, you’ll usually get first pick of available crews, easier parking, and a more relaxed pace. Weekends — especially Saturdays — fill up fastest and are priced accordingly.
Tips for Any Move Date in Kansas City
- Book early: Our calendar fills fast on weekends and month-ends, especially May through August. 2–4 weeks ahead is the minimum; 6–8 weeks is better in peak season.
- Request a morning start: We start as early as 8am. Getting underway in the morning means the heaviest work happens before peak heat and afternoon traffic.
- Watch I-435 and I-70: Rush hour (7–9am and 4–6pm) adds real time to cross-town moves. A mid-day start can actually be faster on short hauls.
- Have a weather backup plan: For moves involving outdoor storage units or long carries, a storm can slow things significantly. Know your options if the forecast changes.
