Moving FAQs: Your Top Questions Answered by Kansas City Movers

Moving in Kansas City

Moving can feel overwhelming — but most of the stress comes from not knowing what to expect.

After more than 15 years and 20,000+ moves across the Kansas City metro, our team at Metro Wide Movers has heard just about every question a customer can ask. We’ve put together answers to the ones we hear most often — so you can plan your move with confidence.

How much does it cost to hire movers in Kansas City?

Moving costs vary depending on the size of your home, the distance of your move, and the services you need. For local moves in the Kansas City metro, most customers choose between two options: a guaranteed fixed price (you know exactly what you’ll pay before moving day) or an hourly rate (better for smaller, simpler moves).

  • 1–2 bedroom apartment: typically 2–4 hours
  • 3 bedroom home: typically 4–7 hours
  • 4+ bedroom home: typically 6–10 hours or a full day

The best way to get an accurate number is to request a free quote — we can provide one over the phone, online, via FaceTime, or in person, usually within a few hours.

How far in advance should I book a moving company?

We recommend booking 2 to 4 weeks in advance, especially if you’re moving between May and September. Weekends fill up fastest. If your timeline is tight, call us directly at (913) 681-7700 and we’ll let you know what’s available.

What’s the difference between a fixed price and an hourly rate?

Fixed price: We assess your home and give you one guaranteed number. No matter how long the move takes, that’s what you pay. This option gives you complete peace of mind and is our most popular choice.

Hourly rate: You pay for the time the crew is working. This works well for smaller moves or when you’re doing some of the work yourself. The downside is less pricing certainty going in.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes — fully. Metro Wide Movers operates under USDOT #1846651 and MC #668855. We carry General Liability Insurance, Motor Cargo Insurance, and Workers’ Compensation Insurance. We’re also A+ rated with the Better Business Bureau and maintain a 4.9-star rating on Google.

Do I need to be present on moving day?

We strongly recommend it, at least at the start and end of the move. Being there at the beginning lets you walk the crew through your home and flag fragile or high-priority items. Being there at the end lets you confirm everything arrived safely and is placed correctly. If you can’t be present, designate a trusted person to be your point of contact.

Can I leave items in my dresser drawers?

For lightweight clothing — yes, in most cases. We do recommend removing anything fragile, heavy, or that could shift during transport. Filing cabinets should be emptied since full ones are very heavy and can damage both the unit and your floors. Your move coordinator will walk you through specifics during your quote.

Do you provide packing materials?

Yes. We offer professional packing services using quality materials — boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, stretch wrap for furniture, and specialty containers for mirrors, artwork, and TVs. You can add full or partial packing to any move. If you prefer to pack yourself, we’re happy to provide a supply list.

What should I do to prepare for moving day?

  • Declutter first — less to move means lower cost and less time.
  • Label your boxes clearly — room name and brief contents on at least two sides.
  • Disassemble large furniture ahead of time if possible — beds, desks, large shelving units.
  • Reserve an elevator if you’re in an apartment building — many require advance booking.
  • Pack an essentials bag — keep medications, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, and important documents with you, not on the truck.

Do you move pianos and heavy specialty items?

Yes. We have the equipment and trained crew to safely move upright and grand pianos, gun safes, large appliances, and other oversized items. These require a custom quote based on the size and weight — just mention it when booking.

What happens if something is damaged during the move?

We handle every item with care — that’s our standard, not an exception. In the rare event that something is damaged, our Motor Cargo Insurance covers your belongings and we’ll work with you directly to resolve any claims quickly and fairly. We recommend photographing high-value items before your move as a precaution.

Can I change or cancel my moving date?

Yes — life happens. Contact us as soon as possible if your plans change and we’ll do our best to reschedule based on availability. Moving timelines are often tied to closings and lease dates that can shift, and we understand that.

Do you handle long-distance moves?

Yes. We handle long-distance moves within a 500-mile radius of Kansas City, covering Missouri, Kansas, and neighboring states. Long-distance moves are quoted on a fixed-price basis so you know your total cost upfront with no surprises.
